Spaces

Yellow moon, silver fields
And fireflies like spinning wheels
Past the pumpjacks in the night
Raised like hammers to the sky
A flatland salute to a twenty year goodbye

To the hazy nights in your brother’s car
Drinkin’ cheap red wine at only bar
Tried to drown your tracks
But you never got very far

From the miles of blue
And your dusty hands
Off the gravel roads
And the beaten path
But when you lost your everything
And what we had wasn’t all it seemed
You left us in the spaces in between

On the county line we’d drive too fast
Tryin’ to chase the future, outrun the past
On half-built dreams that were never meant to last
‘Cuz this place dried up when the fields turned brown
And the walls closed in when the mill shut down
And a blood red sun was the only thing around
‘Cept the miles of blue
And your dusty hands
Off the gravel roads
And the beaten path
But when you lost your everything
And what we had wasn’t all it seemed
You left us in the spaces in between

December winds and prairie arch
Crossed winter’s bridge to break my heart
A million miles, a thousand lives apart

So pictures fade to amber light
From summer switchgrass to silent night
Remind you of the spaces left in time

From the miles of blue
And your dusty hands
Off the gravel roads
And the beaten path
But when you’ve lost your everything
And where you are ain’t all it seems
You’ll find it in the faces
You’ll find it in the places
You’ll find it in the spaces
In between
